1. About the Grant

The grant is implemented by the Ministry of Health, responsible for interventions at primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities (bio-medical – mainly case management and at community level (iCCM). It is also responsible for LLIN routine and mass campaign distribution of and health systems strengthening with a total grant amount of US$ 58,981,176.

2. Goals:

To reduce malaria incidence from a 2016 baseline of 386 per 1000 population to 129/1000 population in 2024 and to reduce malaria deaths from 23 per 100,000 populations to 7/100,000 population by 2024.


3. Target Group/Beneficiaries:

  • The general population;
  • Pregnant women;
  • Children under 5 years.

4. Strategies:

  • Ensure 100% coverage for prompt and effective first and second-line treatment (ACT and injectable artesunate) to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality;
  • Ensure uninterrupted availability of malaria commodities at all service points by 2022;
  • Expand iCCM at community level to reduce presumptive diagnosis through the use of RDTs at the community level, enhance data utilization by Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs);
  • To increase proportion of caregivers of under-five children who take action to seek appropriate malaria treatment within 24 hours of the onset of fever from 31.2% to 50% by June 2024;
  • By 2024, at least 90% of the population use one or more malaria preventative interventions;
  • Strengthen Monitoring and Evaluation systems to enable accurate data reporting, improve prioritization of malaria interventions and accountability for proper commodity use at the facility and community levels. 

5. Planned Activities:

  • Procure case management commodities including (ACT, RDT, artesunate injectables);
  • Procure LLINs for the 2021 mass campaign;
  • Conduct case management refresher trainings at district level;
  • Perform data quality audits;
  • Conduct Malaria Data Review Meetings at zonal and district levels;
  • Support the implementation of DHIS II;
  • Conduct drug efficacy studies;
  • Conduct entomological profile and insecticide resistance studies;
  • Conduct quarterly post marketing surveillance;
  • Performing quality assurance and quality control of malaria drugs.
