The Stop TB Partnership, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady of Malawi, hosted a high-level breakfast for civil society organizations (CSOs), communities, tuberculosis (TB) survivors, and intergovernmental organizations. This event was one of the side activities associated with the ongoing Global Fund Board Meeting, which is taking place in Malawi from November 19 to 22.
Her Excellence Madame Monica Chakwera, First Lady of Malawi, delivered an inspiring message on tuberculosis (TB) prevention. She emphasized that “prevention is better than cure,” as nearly half of all TB cases go undetected, particularly in Africa where 80% of the population resides in rural areas.
During a meeting with 100 TB survivors, she urged everyone to share knowledge and promote education about TB, acknowledging the invaluable work of community health volunteers. Their efforts are crucial in fighting this disease, which remains the second leading cause of death worldwide.
Madam Chakwera called for increased support from the Global Fund, including funding for community volunteers, mobile diagnostic events, and research to improve prevention methods. With continued investment, Malawi can work towards reducing TB cases and achieving the global goal to end TB by 2030.
